BOULEVARD FOOD CO-OP

Mission

The Boulevard Food Co-op aims to establish a community in which all residents obtain a safe, culturally appropriate, nutritionally sound diet through an economically and environmentally sustainable system that promotes community self-reliance and social justice.

Summary

The Boulevard Food Cooperative is a distributive outlet that offers an alternative to pantries, soup kitchens, and other traditional hand-out methods of food delivery. In addition to creating increased access to healthy foods including fresh produce, BFC also offers services to promote healthy eating by educating and engaging the community. The BFC works to start a greater dialogue on the issue of food insecurity. Encouraging self-determination is an essential part to BFC’s attempt to provide a dignified solution to one of the most fundamental human needs. The program is part of the Yo Boulevard! Initiative launched by former city council member Kwanza Hall to revitalize Boulevard, a blighted Old Fourth Ward thoroughfare. BFC builds upon existing knowledge to effectively use food as a vehicle for change.
