First NPU Working Session of 2020

Last Saturday, residents from over half of the city’s 25 Neighborhood Planning Units (NPUs) joined us for the first NPU Initiative working session of this year. We shared a recap of what we’ve learned through the Initiative in 2019 and how we plan to continue engaging people across the city of Atlanta in 2020 to understand more about how people are engaging with their neighborhoods and their city government.

The NPU Initiative is committed to ensuring that residents’ at the table and their voices are heard while we co-create strategies to listen and learn about the past, present, and future of the NPU system.

Sometimes people’s voices need to be written onto pieces of paper, folded into airplanes, and flown around the room!

We asked attendees what they loved about the NPU system. A few of our favorite responses were:

  • “Great way to know what is happening in my community”

  • “Gives ordinary citizens the opportunity to hold local government accountable”

  • “No other city has an NPU system!”

  • “The opportunity for citizens to have a voice & input in the development of their communities”

We also had fun asking those in the room, “If the NPUs had a theme song, what would it be?” Here’s that playlist:

We got some great input on what people are interested in learning about their neighborhoods, the NPU system, and how local government works that will help shape our educational programming throughout this year.

During the working session, we also shared a glimpse of what’s in store for the NPU Initiative in 2020! This spring, we are officially launching our 2020 Community Engagement Survey, where we will be collecting data on subjects such as how Atlantans participate in community activities, their involvement with local government, and their relationship with the NPU system. We will be hosting pop-up neighborhood events, door-to-door canvassing, and tons of awesome programming to engage with Atlanta on the neighborhood level.

Stay tuned for more information about how you can help us launch the community engagement survey, our outreach efforts, and how you can partner with us to achieve our collective goals.
