Mission

We Love BuHi’s mission is to create connection and belonging within Buford Highway's multicultural community through place-based storytelling and design.

Summary

We Love BuHi began in 2015 as an Instagram account run by Marian Liou that explored the businesses in the Brookhaven/Chamblee/Doraville corridor and told the stories of their owners. It has since developed into a non-profit organization that records oral histories, paints murals, holds tours, and more. We Love BuHi seeks to generate community, encourage inclusive and equitable growth, and catalyze conversation around the area which is at risk of gentrifying by connecting diverse populations through place-based storytelling, public art, and participatory planning and design. The organization envisions a more sustainable future for the community that is interwoven with its diverse, immigrant stories.

Experience

Marian started the We Love BuHi Instagram account partly as a personal journey for herself as the daughter of Chinese immigrants from Taiwan and partly in response to the immigrant communities’ lack of voice in urban planning in an area at risk of gentrifying. The account which grew into a nonprofit led Mariane into the world of urban planning. Marian is a long-time resident of Atlanta. She is also an attorney and consultant and graduated from Stanford and Columbia Law School.
