The mission of MaituFoods is to honor the art of food rituals, and to serve humanity in a way that promotes the least harm and the most good for people, animals, and the environment.
MaituFoods is a vegan meal delivery service and education hub working to develop culturally appropriate and accessible educational materials that highlight the benefits of healthy nutrition through a vegan diet. MaituFoods hosts veganic agricultural workshops, community feasts, and farm and kitchen trainings at their headquarters, a five-acre food forest. In addition, MaituFoods offers a plant-based pregnancy program. Since 2008, MaituFoods has served more than 2,000 vegan school lunches to children through a subsidized vegan lunch program and has provided more than 1,500 vegan meals to families and private chef clients.
JoVonna Johnson-Cooke is a vegan chef and food justice advocate working in Atlanta. As a mother of two children, JoVonna realized the importance of not only implementing healthy dietary practices within families, but also informing children of the benefits of nutrition. She established MaituFoods in 2008 specifically in response to the need for healthy lunch options at their neighborhood private school. JoVonna also co-founded Grow Where You Are, an Atlanta-based growers’ collective with her husband, Eugene Cooke who was also a CCI fellow.
