J. Olu Baiyewu
Food Innovation Fellow 2016-2017
The Eyedrum Rooftop Garden’s mission is to be a fully functioning, production garden growing a variety of herbs, flowers, and vegetables throughout the year, that helps community members in South Downtown access healthy, fresh food options.
The Eyedrum Rooftop Garden started as an initiative to introduce more healthy food options to South Downtown, where the Art & Music Gallery was formerly located, and grew literally and figuratively into a fully functioning garden that produced a variety of herbs, flowers, and vegetables through the calendar year. In addition to selling its produce to local residents, The Garden also served as an event site, hosting educational classes and workshops on local food system development.
J. Olu Baiyewu studied at Morehouse College and started his entrepreneurial career with ThePopShop, a locally-sourced ice pop operation. J.’s following ventures have also centered around increasing access to high quality, healthy, and fresh foods. In addition to his position at the helm of the Eyedrum Gallery’s initiative to install a rooftop garden, J. is also the founder and director of Organix Matters and runs the West End Farmers Market on Saturdays and the Fresh MARTA Market at West End MARTA Station on Tuesdays.
